House of Babies

By Robin Elise Weiss, LCCE, About.com

If you are addicted to birth stories on television you have got to watch Discovery Health Channel's latest birth reality show. House of Babies is filmed at a Miami birth center run by midwife, Shari Daniels. The show is 30 minutes and shows multiples births in each episode.

While the show's scenes are still shot with privacy in mind, they do cover more ground than the typical shows like Baby Story. The underwater photography and footage shot at waterbirths is amazing. I've not seen footage like this even in professional birth videos.

What it doesn't include is the cutesy story lines attached to the other baby programs. No one rearranges the furniture or paints the baby's room while the families are at the hospital giving birth. It's pure and simple normal birth.

The footage is raw and real, not doctored for the television audience. The pain and hard work of labor and birth is obvious. Equally obvious is the joy of holding your newborn for the first time. House of Babies doesn't pretty it up, they just show you how to cope.

Dads, siblings, water births, VBAC - the show has something for everyone. From first time moms who are concerned to the more experienced moms who just want to get the show on the road, this is one reality show about birth that I can actually recommend.
